چکیده

' 'One picture is worth more than a thousand words''. The validity of this expression, which is a leitmotiv in the publicity sector, is not limited to the strategy underlying advertisements. It certainly also applies to the commanding role images play in diagnostic medicine. To draw lines of development in imaging instruments, one must start where the arsenal of nuclear medicine equipment stands today. In this article, nuclear imaging instruments that are likely to be of interest to the nuclear medicine community of developing countries are emphasized. The rectilinear scanner was the earliest instrument with which one created an image of a radioactive distribution inside the body. It still is a common — and reliable — piece of equipment in many nuclear medicine centres in the Third World. The scanner consists of a detector fitted with a lead collimator, which focuses the radiation-sensitive field of view to a narrow spot below it. The detector is being moved along a meandering path oyer the selected area where a radioactive tracer is distributed — for example, the organ to be imaged in the patient. The amount of radioactivity measured at each position is simultaneously recorded with a printing device attached at the other end of the moving detector assembly. After the total area has been scanned, the total pattern of printed dashes, the "scan", is a life-size presentation of the tracer distribution.

Recent Advances in PET-MR Hybrid contrast agent

Introduction: All of the Imaging modalities have advantages and disadvantages alone. So if we want to have the best and perfect image, combining these modalities produces something we desired. PET-MR images consist of morphologic and metabolic data. MRI and PET provide high spatial and contrast resolution and high sensitivity and molecular information respectively. Hybrid PET-...

Computed tomography based attenuation correction in PET/CT: Principles, instrumentation, protocols, artifacts and future trends

The advent of dual-modality PET/CT imaging has revolutionized the practice of clinical oncology, cardiology and neurology by improving lesions localization and the possibility of accurate quantitative analysis. In addition, the use of CT images for CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) allows to decrease the overall scanning time and to create a noise-free attenuat...

Status of and trends in nuclear medicine in the United States.

Nuclear medicine in the United States has grown because of advances in technology, including hybrid imaging, the introduction of new radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis and therapy, and the development of molecular imaging based on the tracer principle, which is not based on radioisotopes. Continued growth of the field will require cost-effectiveness data and evidence that nuclear medicine proce...

Recent Advances in Computational Methods for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Data Processing

Although three-dimensional protein structure determination using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a computationally costly and tedious process that would benefit from advanced computational techniques, it has not garnered much research attention from specialists in bioinformatics and computational biology. In this paper, we review recent advances in computational methods for NMR...

Unusual diagnosis of Von Hippel Lindau syndrome on PET/CT - Case report and brief review of literature

We report an unusual case of a young male with cerebellar hemangioblastoma treated previously for medullary carcinoma of thyroid, whose PET/CT scans revealed a constellation of findings that suggested the rare Von Hippel Lindau syndrome. The diagnosis was clinched by confirming the findings on whole body contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and contrast enha...
